Reflections - Sept. 15, 2017

Peace! Be Still!

danFirst, the forecasters told us Hurricane Irma was going to go right up the center of the state of Florida.  Then they adjusted and said it would go up the east coast. Then it was the west coast.  Then word began to filter our way that the hurricane was going to hit Atlanta.  Even with all of our modern technology, storms can still sometimes surprise us, can't they?

The same is true of our personal lives.  Storms can arise suddenly and unexpectedly.  Thinking of this, I am reminded of the experience of the disciples on the Sea of Galilee.  They didn't see the storm coming and the boat was nearly swamped when it did come.  Still, in the midst of their frightening situation, Jesus commanded, "Peace!  Be still!"  (Mark 4:39).

As we deal with the aftermath of our visit from Irma, I want to remind you of several things.

First, please keep all of those affected by the recent hurricanes that have impacted so many in your thoughts and prayers.

Second, do what you can to help.  Here at the Church, we are taking up an offering for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), or you can go on Amazon and purchase items that will be used for the Flood Buckets we will put together on the Great Day of Service.

Third, please be aware that as a result of the hurricane we have readjusted the schedule for our Moving Forward Together Capital Campaign.  The campaign kickoff scheduled for this week is rescheduled for September 27 during Wednesday Night Supper.  I hope each of you will make plans to be present, even if you have heard previous presentations.  There will be information shared that night that you have probably not heard previously.

Finally, and most importantly:  Please know your Church is here for you should you be dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma or if you are facing a personal storm.  As the body of Christ, we seek to be channels through which Christ speaks to the storm you are facing, "Peace!  Be still!"
