Each summer, beginning in 2001 and continuing for 13 years, a DUMC sponsored construction mission team has traveled to Sacra Familia near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The mission teams worked on construction projects and made improvements at Camp John Wesley Clay, a Methodist mountain retreat for poor children living in the favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro. They have also conducted Vacation Bible School programs for the local children, built a new church for the local Methodist congregation in Sacra Familia and enjoyed Christian fellowship with the Brazilian people Three different years a medical team accompanied the construction team to provide much needed medical services to poor communities in the area. In 2007 and 2012, our church sponsored a medical mission teams to the Amazon region of Brazil to provide care for the indigenous people who have little or no access to medical care.
In 2014, DUMC expanded its mission work in Brazil by sponsoring a construction mission team that traveled to Penedo, Brazil to construct a complete bath house at beautiful camp Pedra Sonora in the mountains northwest of Rio de Janeiro. The 18 member team worked long and hard from the foundation up and fully completed the facility in just 5 days! In addition, a Vacation Bible School program was conducted for the children in Penedo and a second Vacation Bible School program was conducted for the children at favela Dique, one of the largest and poorest favelas in all of Rio.
