Community Outreach and Missions

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE!!

Why not do something that makes a REAL difference!
Get off the couch!! VOLUNTEER

Visit one of these organizations where you can make a difference this summer:

Need a rainy day project?

Bake cookies or cupcakes for our local firefighters or police officers; make cards to be sent to our members who are serving in the military; make cards or placemats to take to some of our members who are in assisted living or nursing facilities.

We are called to show God's love by serving others. Where are you being called?

Do you like to sort pantry items? play in the dirt? build someting? play games? deliver meals? sit and talk? sew? sing? cook? paint? Whatever it is you like to do, we can find a place for you to serve. If you or your group need a project for a one-time or long term service, contact Linda King at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Local missions we support include:

We help troubled children and disadvantaged youth by supporting:

We seek to eliminate substandard housing in Atlanta through:

  • WESLEY COMMUNITY CENTERS, INC. Through Project Extend, we repair homes for the elderly on our Great Day of Service. Wesley Community Centers also provide ministries for children and families in the inner city.
  • WESLEY'S WALK FOR OTHERS, sponsored by the North Georgia Conference of the UMC, provides funds for the ministries of Wesley Community Centers. It takes place on the last Saturday in October at Stone Mountain Park.
  • HABITAT FOR HUMANITY – We have built a house each year since 1995! In 2009 we will build our fifteenth home. The funds for the house are raised from our annual Holiday Festival held in November.

Other agencies that receive volunteer and financial support include:

  • ALDERSGATE HOMES provides homes for the mentally retarded who are able to live in a sheltered environment. DUMC co-sponsors an apartment in the Northlake area for a mentally challenged lady.
  • THE CRIME VICTIM'S COUNCIL which aids the families of crime victims.
  • THE GOOD SAMARITAN CLINIC which is a medical clinic providing services to the working poor in the inner city.
  • WESLEY HOME (WESLEY WOODS) which is our Conference facility for the aging. Facilities located throughout North Georgia offer residential and health care facilities for the elderly. We participate in these ministries through our financial support:

Throughout the World we send our support through the following groups:

  • UNITED METHODIST VOLUNTEERS IN MISSION (UMVIM) is an agency of The United Methodist Church that keeps a listing of projects that need volunteers. Through this agency individuals and teams from a local church, may be involved in short term mission projects throughout the United States and all over the world. This agency also knows where volunteer help is needed for Disaster Relief. www.umvim.org
  • THE UNITED METHODIST COMMITTEE ON RELIEF responds to global needs in three areas: disasters, displaced persons (refugees), and world hunger. Staff is available to help at a moments notice when disasters occur. UMCOR is often the Non-Government Organization (NGO) working in refugee camps or disaster sites around the world. Several programs of the United Methodist Church are in place to address the tragedy of hunger throughout the world, especially in Africa. UMCOR maintains a National and International Disaster Response Hot Line: 800-841-1235; Hot Line Volunteers: 800-854-7780. (www.umcor.org)
  • THE WORLD EVANGELISM INSTITUTE which trains evangelists from around the world to help proclaim the Gospel.
  • GLOBAL HEALTH ACTION (INSA) which trains health professionals in developing nations to provide for their people. In addition to providing financial support for missionaries in Alaska and Cambodia, DUMC establishes and maintains contact with these missionaries on a regular basis.
  • SPECIAL OFFERINGS are requested several times during the year; the congregation is provided with information about committing to a special offering, which is sacrificial giving, over and above what has been pledged. Offerings include: Miracle of His Touch during Lent; Wesley Homes; World Wide Communion and The United Methodist Children's Homes. Our church members traditionally contribute generously, over and above budgeted mission support.

Ghana Mission 2008

Ghana, in equatorial West Africa, is blessed with a friendly people and a stable society. But Ghana also faces huge challenges. One in every nineteen children dies in infancy, primarily from bad water or malaria. Per capita gross domestic product is around $1,400. The Ghanaians are working to improve their homeland: Ghana was the first sub-Saharan nation in colonial Africa to gain independence, the first nation to host the United States Peace Corps, and is free from civil unrest.
