Wednesday's Word - An Email Devotional - by: Dr. B. Wiley Stephens
Many times in life we need another to guide us and be with us.  When touring a strange place, a guide is of great value to make sure we see all we should see.  When going through surgery, an anesthesiologist monitors our vital signs to make sure we are all right.   A coach not only prepares his or her team for competition but is there to guide them through the game.  The director of a play or the conductor of an orchestra does the same for those under his or her guidance as the coach does for his or her charges.   None of these are in the spotlight but instead guide others.

Jesus knew he was about to leave his disciples as the cross awaited him.   His ministry had been to build them in a “team” that would carry on this ministry after he was crucified.   Now as he gathers around the table for his final words to them, he makes a promise in John 14.  He will not leave them alone, or orphaned, or desolate.  He will give them an Advocate that will guide them, empower them, protect them, and inspire them.  He was entrusting them to the Holy Spirit.

Those times when we feel alone and frightened, let us know we are not alone.  Just as the examples of the guide or conductor or director or coach who helps others, so the Holy Spirit is there for us.   We can trust in God’s guidance.

May God bless you and yours,

Wiley Stephens
