Jesus’ invitation “Come to me, all you that are weary and carry a heavy burden” is needed more today than ever before.  To a world worn down by war, shortages, economic woes, terror, and so many other problems, the invitation is good news.  But notice that the rest of that paragraph in Matthew 11:28,29, while promising rest, it also presents a challenge to us.  We are invited to take his yoke.  That is to partner ourselves with Jesus where Jesus would lead us.  For we are called to be like Jesus, to be humble and gentle in spirit.  You see, it is not escape that Jesus is offering us, but rather a way to be empowered by his grace and presence.

As we celebrate our independence as a nation, let us remember that we say, “we are one nation under God.”   Those words are not a prideful boast that God will bless us more than other nations; but that we indeed will seek to find his way and take his yoke, and to be humble and gentle.   Our many blessings and freedoms are gifts to be used.  If we learn to live as a nation “Under God,” then we will truly change the world we live in.

May God bless you and yours,

Wiley Stephens
